Gerrit Smit, Portfolio Manager

Gerrit is Head of the Equity Management team, he has overall responsibility for the business unit, along with its Portfolio Management and Equity Research functions.

Gerrit joined the Group in 2008 following over 25 years’ investment experience as Equity Analyst, Chief Investment Strategist and Chief Investment Officer for Sanlam’s International portfolios. He holds a Hons B.Com degree from the University of Stellenbosch and the University of South Africa and a PSM qualification from the Business School of the University of Stellenbosch.

Tom is responsible for company research within the Equity Management team, specialising in in-depth, bottom-up research. He covers multiple companies across all sectors under the single global quality equity mandate.

In his capacity of Head of Equity Funds Tom also oversees the management of other equity funds and products at SFIM.

Tom joined from ZAN Partners having previously worked at Sigma Capital and PWC. Tom is a CFA charterholder, a chartered member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and holds a CFA Certificate in ESG Investing. Tom studied Economics & Politics at Durham University.

Carolyn is a Partner, supporting the continued scaling of GBI across all channels.

Carolyn joined the Group in 2024 from Aegon Asset Management in Edinburgh, where she was lead Investment Manager for the Aegon US Equity Pension Fund, co-manager of the Aegon Technology Pension Fund, and support manager for the Aegon Global Equity Market Neutral Fund. Prior to Aegon Asset Management, Carolyn spent five years as an Investment Analyst at Baillie Gifford.

She holds a Masters of Arts in English Literature from the University of Cambridge, and a Masters in Early Modern Studies (with distinction) from the University of Aberdeen.

Mark is a Senior Equity Research Analyst within the Equity Management team, specialising in in-depth, bottom up company research. He covers multiple companies across all sectors under the single global quality equity mandate.

Prior to joining Stonehage Fleming, Mark spent over 9 years at Investec Asset Management where he was a Global Equity Analyst and Sector Portfolio Manager. Previously, he worked at M&G Investments in both Pan-European and global equity analyst roles. Mark is a CFA Charterholder and graduated from Warwick University with a first class honours degree in economics.

Devon is an Equity Research Analyst within within the Equity Management team, specialising in in-depth, bottom up company research. He covers multiple companies across all sectors under the single global quality equity mandate.

Devon joined the Equity Management team in 2023 from Rootstock Investment Management, having previously worked at a South African economic consulting firm.

Devon is a CFA Charterholder, and has a Masters degree in Econometrics, cum laude, from the University of Pretoria.

Thomas is a Director within the Equity Management team, providing client-servicing support to Gerrit Smit, Head of the Equity Management team.

Thomas joined the Group in 2011, having previously worked as a Project Manager at Jabulani Rural Health Foundation. Prior to this, he worked as a Consultant at IQuad Group Limited in Cape Town, consulting on various government-initiated investment incentive programmes. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Business Science (Honours) degree from the University of Cape Town and is a CFA charterholder.

Pran is a Senior Equity Research Analyst within the Equity Management team, specialising in in-depth, bottom up company research. She covers multiple companies across all sectors under the single global quality equity mandate.

She joined the Group in 2024, from Melville Douglas Investment Management, where she was a Senior Global Equity Analyst and Co-Fund Manager of their global equity fund. Pran has demonstrated throughout her career her ability to add value through high quality company and industry research.

She holds a Bachelor of Business Science (Hons) in Finance from the University of Cape Town and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.

2. According to Art. 6 Para. 2 of the Swiss Federal Collective Investment Schemes Ordinance (CISO), in particular Art. 10 Para. 4 CISA, qualified investors are also considered:
Independent asset managers and investors who have entered into a written asset management. agreement with independent asset managers to the extent that:
a. The asset manager as a financial intermediary is subject to the Money Laundering Act (MLA) of 10 October 1997 (Art. 2 Para. 3 lit. e MLA);
b. The asset manager is subject to a professional code of conduct which is recognized as a minimum standard by the supervisory authority, and
c. The asset management contract contains the recognized guidelines of a professional organization.

3. A high net worth individual is someone who can confirm in writing that they directly or indirectly have net financial investments of at least 2 million Swiss francs.
* Financial investments are bank assets (demand or time deposits), fiduciary assets, securities (including collective investment schemes and structured products), derivatives, precious metals as well as life insurances with a replacement value.
* Direct investments in real estate and claims from social insurances (including claims from the 2. and 3. Pillar), are not considered financial investments.
* The confirmation of financial investments has to be submitted no later than the time the collective investment scheme is offered and distributed.
* The advertiser or provider of the collective investment scheme must review the existence of the required financial investments if there are doubts as to whether the person qualifies as a high-net-worth individual.
* A written confirmation is not necessary if the required financial investments are deposited at the bank or the securities dealer who is also offering or distributing the collective investment scheme.
Private investment vehicles which have been set up for private persons can be treated like high-net-worth individuals as long as they hold net investments of over 2 million Swiss francs.
