A Comprehensive Approach to Financial Decision-Making

Two Minutes with Tom Lloyd-Read of Wealth Planning on Cash Flow Modelling

Cash flow modelling serves as the foundation for virtually all client relationships. It is typically triggered by major life events such as business sales, retirement preparations, or considerations around intergenerational wealth transfer. Its primary value is in its ability to demonstrate the long-term consequences of current financial decisions, providing clients with clear visibility into how their choices today will impact their financial security in the future.

Our approach is fundamentally plan-centric rather than product-driven. The idea is to offer our clients reassurance, confidence and a clearer sense of direction. By gathering detailed information about their assets, outgoings, goals and long‑term ambitions, we can project a personalised picture of what their financial future may look like and plan for contingencies.

Cash flow modelling isn’t a ‘one and done’ exercise. It's something that should be adapted as life moves on due to subtle changes in a person’s situation or larger life events, as well as shifts in the investment markets or legislation. It is important therefore that the plan is updated on at least an annual basis.

People respond to the cash flow modelling exercise in different ways. Big picture thinkers appreciate seeing their entire ‘balance sheet’ laid out, understanding the direction of their wealth at a glance. Detail‑oriented clients, meanwhile, enjoy exploring the specifics such as tax assumptions, spending patterns and year‑on‑year investment performance. And those with little financial experience often find it an accessible introduction to the world of wealth management.

There is no ‘typical’ client that benefits from cash flow modelling. From those nearing retirement, with a few million pounds in their pension, to people worth hundreds of millions of pounds, assessing their next philanthropic donation, cash flow modelling serves as an educational opportunity to help better understand their financial position. That way they can make an informed decision about the recommendations being made to them.
