Internships: don’t be afraid to ask questions

Meet Iman Salem

In 2021 Stonehage Fleming joined over 700 companies to participate in the 10,000 Black Interns scheme. The programme, dedicated to offering over 2,000 internships to black students across the UK each year for five consecutive years, aims to help young adults kick start their career and improve diversity in the City for the long term.

In July, our Investment Management team welcomed Chemical Engineering graduate Iman Salem for a six-week placement. We caught up with Iman to find out how it went.

What motivated you to apply for an internship with Stonehage Fleming? Chemical Engineering encompasses all the subjects that I love - maths, chemistry and physics. I developed many transferrable skills but wanted to gain more exposure into what day-to-day life in Wealth Management entails. The 10,000 Black Interns network shared a number of opportunities with me but Stonehage Fleming’s emphasis on family really stood out - it felt much more personal.

What were your first impressions of Stonehage Fleming? Everyone was so welcoming from day one. The company’s values of Family, Excellence and Moral Courage are truly reflected through the people and the culture. I immediately felt like a valued member of the team.

What was your top lesson learned? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. In my experience people are always happy to support you.

What did you enjoy most? The opportunity to work on projects that were meaningful. I really enjoyed supporting the team with an ESG report for a client. I’m passionate about sustainability and the environment. This internship made me aware of roles within finance that can have a positive impact.

Why are internships important? You get a glimpse of what goes on in a firm without committing to a particular sector or business. Having no background in finance, it’s been an opportunity for me to explore and learn at a really fast pace.

What advice would you give others on the internship scheme? Ask lots of questions. If you are curious about a certain area ask to talk to the expert, it can be intimidating but always valuable. And add everyone on LinkedIn – harness your new connections!
