To me, inspiring inclusion means creating opportunities and encouraging participation for all. In practice, it means actively discouraging messaging around metrics such as quotas for inclusion in favour of promoting the value of diversity and inclusion in the work place.
It’s one thing to be inspired, but the creation of real opportunities is the only way to support those who are inspired to act on it. Either you create opportunities yourself, or opportunities need to be designed and implemented by those who have the power to do so.
To inspire inclusion, it is so important to promote of the stories of those who have already paved the way for women and minority groups.
I hope that we get to a stage in the future where it's not deemed "inspiring" to see female and minority inclusion, it's just normal.
In my career to date, I have been most inspired by people who have chosen to make very difficult or very bold decisions. I have also been hugely inspired and actively supported by my fellow SFXV!
Have I have inspired others? It is difficult to say, although I have received many flattering messages on LinkedIn. I get the feeling that the dreamers – the ones who want to try something – are inspired by the stories of those who are doing just that.
