Passion Versus Capital – What Should Drive Art Collectors?

Have the courage of your convictions, urges Maria de Peverelli.

  • Art expert Maria de Peverelli stresses the importance of researching artists and collecting with genuine passion.
  • Growing demand for Art Management services reflects the rising financial value and complexity of art collections.
  • In Stonehage Fleming’s ‘Family Futures, Wisdom & Wealth’ podcast, Maria shares practical guidance on building and preserving meaningful art collections.

When it comes to acquiring art, Maria de Peverelli has two main pieces of advice: do your research and find your passion.

“If you are serious about collecting, you have to learn about the subject, learn about the area, or the artist you are interested in,” she told listeners on the fifth episode of Stonehage Fleming’s podcast, ‘Family Futures, Wisdom and Wealth’. “If you know what you are doing, you will create an important collection.”

When it comes to passion, Maria encouraged listeners to follow their intuition when buying art and choose artwork that appeals to their own personal taste. “Start buying with your heart, because you should buy what you like, with your eyes, because you will have to see a lot, and not with your ears, because of what other people have told you. Most of our clients are people that buy for passion.”

Over the last two decades, Maria has noticed increasing demand for her team’s Art Management services. “One of the reasons our services are becoming more relevant today is because the value of art has increased dramatically in the past twenty years. Art, therefore, constitutes a much larger portion of a collector’s financial assets. Collectors and those with fiduciary responsibilities understand the need to use the same care and risk management techniques in looking after collections as they would any other asset.”

‘Family Futures, Wisdom & Wealth’ is out now. Access episode five here to listen to host, Guy Hudson, interview Maria de Peverelli on misconceptions around collecting art, practical tips for preserving an art collection’s value, and more.
