Dr van der Merwe founded CURRO in 1998 and became the CEO of CURRO Holdings when the company listed on the JSE in June 2011. He stepped down as CEO in mid-2017. In his tenure of almost 20 years in CURRO, the company grew to 124 schools accommodating 47 000 learners. For his efforts in the establishing of CURRO he was awarded Business Leader by The Bellville Chamber of Commerce (2011) and also received the EY World Entrepreneur Award, Southern Africa in 2013. Dr van der Merwe is now the CEO of Stadio Holdings which focuses on the widening of access for tertiary students. He was awarded the 2017 Business Leader of the Year by The Durbanville Chamber of Commerce.
