Jasmine, an Economics and Management student at the University of Bristol, recently joined Stonehage Fleming Investment Management via the #10,000 Black Interns Programme. We caught up with her this week to hear about what motivates her and her advice for future interns.
What motivated you to apply for an internship?
As a final-year student, I sought an internship opportunity to gain practical experience, particularly in the Financial services industry. I was drawn to Stonehage Fleming’s reputation and the opportunity to learn about providing high quality strategic advice to help families protect their wealth. I was also keen to learn more about the firm's SF15 initiative, which aligns with my involvement in diversity, equality and inclusion initiatives at my University’s Banking and Investment society.
What were your first impressions of Stonehage Fleming?
I loved the friendly and team-oriented environment, not to mention the super convenient location near Oxford Street. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to share their knowledge. Eva, my line manager, really went above and beyond by introducing me to different teams during my first two weeks.
What was your top lesson learned?
The importance of a client-centric approach in Investment Management. There’s a huge emphasis on understanding each client's specific needs and circumstances to craft effective investment strategies. In addition, the value of transferable skills such as communication, empathy, and meticulous attention to detail in adapting to evolving financial markets.
What did you enjoy most?
Working with accomplished professionals from diverse backgrounds has been a highlight of my internship. Also learning more about the breadth of Stonehage Fleming services, such as art management, wealth planning, family office, and private capital solutions. I was also surprised by how fascinating the industry is, which involves working closely with ultra-high-net-worth families.
What advice would you give others on the internship scheme?
Prospective interns should be themselves and not be afraid to show off their skills during the application process. Don't hesitate to seek guidance and mentorship, especially through connections on LinkedIn. Focus on enhancing your CV to highlight both technical expertise and soft skills. When you get your internship, strive to be proactive, inquisitive, and lend a helpful hand when possible. I urge all interns to embrace learning from professionals and actively seek feedback for personal growth.
