Shed your ‘mask’ to communicate and connect people in a common purpose
Leading with an authentic voice is essential for successful leadership. It is the only way to inspire people and bring them together in a common purpose, according to Dan Leatherdale, Chief Executive of London-based communications coaches, AGL Communications.
This is particularly pertinent in today’s environment. The coronavirus pandemic has created extreme uncertainty and disruption and people are looking for reassurance and guidance on how to proceed. The importance of good leadership cannot be overstated.
“The reason people don’t connect with an audience is often because they are wearing a ‘mask’,” says Dan. “We help people strip back a couple of layers which allows others to connect to what they are saying.”
In finding this authentic voice, Dan recommends starting by establishing a leader’s key messages. “First we work out the fundamental meaning of what you are trying to say. The next step is to focus on communicating what you want to say in your own words. The last step is to connect people - using your stories and the stories of others to mobilise, engage and energise those you are leading”.
Central to AGL’s philosophy is that leadership need not be the domain of one individual. “Leadership is an activity, not restricted to a single person or dependent on a position within hierarchy”, he says. “Our belief is that businesses can ‘activate’ leadership so that the many not the few are making bold, values-based decisions together with a shared sense of purpose.”
Dan recommends starting early when it comes to preparing the next generation of leaders. “Not planning ahead is a mistake families and businesses often make. As we have seen over the past month, change can happen quickly and suddenly,” he says.
“Without planning and preparation, the skills to communicate authentically won’t necessarily be there to deal with the unexpected. Leaders will be unable to cut through the noise to motivate others to come together for a common purpose”, explains Dan. “Regardless of the circumstances, it should be baked into every thought process about the future.”
