“What would my 21-year-old self say to my 45-year-old self? Think big, dream bigger, get prepared and go do it.” – this is just one authentic bit of wisdom imparted by Founder Holly Budge, which inspired guests at the Stonehage Fleming Next Generation programme, hosted in our offices in June. Her words highlighted the breadth of experiences shared at the annual event. During the week, a group of 30 young people participated in engaging sessions that covered leadership, family dynamics, communication, and the foundations of finance and business.
The programme, led by Matthew Fleming, provides attendees with a deep dive into their potential, helping them build skills in practical topics related to values, reputation and risk management, leadership, the importance of failure, and much more.
Inspiring stories were shared, like ultra runner and coach Imo Boddy's perspective on endurance: "the human body can endure almost anything. It's the mind you need to convince." Danielle Saputo, a third-generation family member, family adviser, and author, stressed the importance of discovering one's purpose, following passions, and acting with courage. “Truly know what your own purpose is, find your passion and have the courage to open up the hard conversations.”
Ben Hardy, Clinical Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School emphasised the value of failure. Charting his own career, he drew on his personal experiences of things not quite going to plan, encouraged attendees to strive for improvement without being too harsh on themselves. Other speakers contextualised the importance of mentorship. “Try and find a business mentor, connection is key because you are only as good as the people you are surrounded by,” – counselled Entrepreneur Charlie Gladstone, who shared his thoughts on ‘gentle leadership’, encouraging the cohort that “working hard is key but it’s easier if you love what you are doing.”
The week ended with a Dragons Den challenge, whereby attendees were divided into groups to brainstorm innovative business plans and collaborate on sharing purposeful and captivating ideas. Despite its competitive nature, the final session sparked reflection among the attendees on the week's sessions and the promising opportunities that lie ahead.
