Nearly half of the families
that participated in our research said
that they had no formal leadership structure,
and two thirds do not hold regular in-person meetings.
Many of the families that we support prefer a less formal
leadership structure with either a single informal leader
or multiple family leaders jointly in charge.
Every family is unique
and there is no perfect easily replicable framework.
However, what we found from our experience in working
with families is
that the most successful leadership structures are
underpinned by clear
and effective communication between family members.
That clear and effective communication is often best
facilitated by external, non-family advisors,
where there is no perceived bias
and where we can use our experience of supporting families
around the world on their governance, leadership,
and communication matters.
