Throughout their successful careers, the Butterworths’ have enjoyed living in different parts of the world. However, as they began to plan for their retirement and a move back to the UK with their young children, they realised the need for a new investment manager. The couple first came across Stonehage Fleming Investment Management through an introduction from our direct equities team, where it quickly became clear that they were seeking a broader mandate to meet their evolving investment requirements.

Butterworth’s Goals

  • Establish themselves in Britain in terms of investment portfolio.
  • Set up tax efficient structure with a long term view for their children.
  • Agree a plan for investment going forward with a medium to long-term strategy (initially with GBP 25 million for investment).

Our Recommendations

  • Facilitated a series of in-depth discussions over a six-month period to establish the Butterworths’ fundamental investment priorities.
  • Alongside wealth planning team, assisted with establishment of structures suitable for their personal investments, as well as those for long-term custody for their children.
  • Implemented three comprehensive strategies, including a balanced personal portfolio for the shorter and medium terms, along with two distinct growth portfolios with different longer-term goals and investment objectives.
  • Wealth Planning introduced an offshore bond wrapper for one of the portfolio structures, with inter-generational transfer of wealth to the children in mind, incorporating very long-term investment horizon.
  • Assisted the process of sourcing a new tax adviser.

  • Alongside the offshore bond wrapper we assisted with the launching of a family investment company and the surrounding advice was tied in with finding them a legal adviser that could help launch the company but also was also be retained to do update their wills etc.
